A transformational journey to resident-directed care.

Most of us believe the best place to live is at home, where we have privacy, dignity and freedom to choose. That’s why Western Home Communities embarked on a journey several years ago, to put home back into nursing home.

A recent renovation at Martin Suites created all private rooms and bathrooms. With that work complete, everyone in a nursing care community at Western Home Communities lives in a private room.

The renovation brought more amenities of home, too: Each floor is a self-contained household with only 25 residents living in a peaceful environment…where a small team of consistent caregivers operates like a family, to meet each resident’s needs and create their very best day.

When you – or someone you love – needs full-time care because of health needs, choose the community’s trusted choice for long-term care: Western Home Communities.

Each year for more than a decade, Cedar Valley residents have voted us first place “Best of the Best” for nursing care. That honor recognizes the hard work of our trusted employees; each day, they provide older adults who have medical needs a life with dignity, purpose and spontaneity.

Martin Suites is Medicare- and Medicaid-certified, inspected annually by the state Department of Inspections and Appeals.

Your doctor will work with our team to determine your health goals during your short-term stay at The Martin Suites. A care plan is created to help meet those goals, and assessments are performed along the way.

  • Yes, of course! Your visitors are welcome anytime. We are following current CMS requirements for COVID-19 protocols.

  • Each day finds something new on the calendar and at least two options for you. You can take a walk outside (even in a wheelchair) or do exercises while seated. Plant flowers, write poetry or create crafts. Enjoy music from hymn sings to drum circles. Test your brain power with trivia and word games. Take part in beanbag baseball or Wii bowling. Play games such as darts, 500, Farkle and bingo. Munch on popcorn while watching a movie. You are always welcome and encouraged to join, but you are free to do as much or as little as you’d like.

  • Yes. We have an active volunteer program throughout Western Home Communities. Volunteers may help with activities, special events, chapel services, devotionals, music performances, gardening and more. Any individual or group who provides volunteer services at WHC first registers with our Director of Volunteer Services and is screened.

  • Whenever you would like! We provide resident-directed care, so our job is to help you determine what your best day looks like.

  • Small housebroken pets are welcome within Western Home Communities when residents can take care of them. At Martin Suites, The Cottages and The Deery Suites, the state also has to approve the request and we can help you get permission.

  • Yes, we have a beauty salon/barber shop at Martin Suites for our residents. Not covered under the daily rate but are available upon request.

  • Western Home Communities provides furnished rooms at Martin Suites along with bed linens, washcloths, towels and toiletries. You are welcome to bring additional furniture, belongings, linens and wall décor to make it your home.

  • We will provide standard wheelchairs and walkers, or you may bring your own, whichever you prefer.

  • Until your health goals are reached. Most of our stays average two to three weeks; Medicare may cover up to 100 days during a benefit period, but that depends on your condition, any hospital stays and how much skilled care has already been received. We can help you determine what benefits you are entitled to and what coverage Medicare will provide.

  • It depends on the policy; we will be happy to review it with you and determine what your policy covers.

  • We accept private pay, Medicare and some Medicaid, as well as long-term care insurance policies that provide for nursing care. Our financial resources liaison is happy to work with you.
