Q: Are there places to walk or exercise?
We have a NuStep exercise machine available. Exercise groups meet in the Commons each week, and Wii games are available if you like to bowl, play tennis, etc.
Q: Can I come and go as I please?
Yes, but we ask that you let the receptionist know if you will be gone for a meal, overnight, or for a long period of time.
Q: Can I do my own laundry?
Yes, there are laundry rooms on second and third floors for your convenience.
Q: Can I get to HyVee, Walmart, target?
Shopping outings are scheduled regularly. You may sign up for these at the front desk.
Q: Can I have internet?
Internet is available in the Commons.
Q: Can I have my car at Stanard Family Assisted Living Center?
Yes. Parking is available in the lot on East 11th Street.
Q: Can I take my own medications?
Yes, as long as your doctor agrees. Staff can also administer your meds to you or set them up in a weekly medication box.
Q: Can my family member’s dog come to visit?
As long as the dog is on a leash and not a danger to anyone.
Q: Can residents have pets?
Pets are allowed provided the resident can care for the pet.
Q: Can, I have my card club over on regular basis?
Yes, contact the receptionist if you need one of the common areas reserved. If you want, beverages and snacks can be arranged through dining services for a nominal fee.
Q: Do I have to get up early for breakfast?
Breakfast is offered from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Microwave and small refrigerator are provided in most rooms. You may have a coffee maker and a toaster in your room.
Q: Do you have nurses on duty 24 hours/day?
Nurses are on duty 24 hours/day in addition to the Director of Stanard Family Assisted Living Center who is a Registered Nurse and is in the building on a full time basis.
Q: How do I get to my doctor’s appointments?
Western Home Communities has handicap accessible buses to transport residents to doctor’s appointments in Cedar Falls and Waterloo. The buses travel to certain areas on specific days, so we encourage appointments be scheduled with that in mind.
Q: How often is my apartment cleaned?
Staff clean apartments weekly and laundry is also done at that time. Staff also changes resident bedding weekly.
Q: I like my apartment cool - do I handle that myself?
Each apartment has an individualized heating/cooling system that you control.
Q: I like to do volunteer work; are there any opportunities at Stanard Family Assisted Living Center?
We encourage residents to contact the Leisure/Volunteer Services department to inquire about volunteer opportunities.
Q: If I’m sick for a few days, can I get extra help temporarily?
We tailor your care to your needs. We can increase your care for a few days and then decrease it when you are feeling better.
Q: Is there an emergency call system?
Each resident has a call light accessible in his/her room.
Q: May out of town guests stay with a resident in their unit?
Family members can stay overnight in the resident’s apartment if this is agreeable to the resident and staff is aware of the plan. There are also guest rooms available in Stanard Center for a fee as well as at our retirement communities.
Q: What if I want to have a large family gathering?
The Commons and East Solarium can accommodate a good-sized group, and a kitchen is available in both those areas. There are several smaller dining areas available as well, some with kitchen facilities. Contact the receptionist to reserve an area.
Q: What time do I have to go to bed?
Q: Where do I get my hair done?
We have a beauty salon on the premises with a beautician on duty certain days of the week. Residents also have access to a manicurist and massage therapist.
Q: Where do I take my bath/shower?
Handicap accessible showers are available in some resident apartments, Other shower rooms are located throughout the facility. Staff can also assist you in your room, or you may choose to have a whirlpool with staff assistance.
